About Falconry

Falconry is the art of hunting falcons at natural quarry in a wild environment. Falconry is not what you might see at a local display, or falconry centre. Those who hunt with short-wings or the true hawks are austringers. However, they are often called falconers. Confused? Welcome to falconry.

Hopefully you will find this site useful and informative, perhaps even less confusing than the opening statement suggests. Please appreciate that you can not hope to be a successful austringer or falconer without a mentor. Unless of course you are totally oblivious or unconcerned about spoiling a few good hawks in the process.

This site is aimed at experienced exponents of falconry and those who wish to take a look and think about the prospects of taking up the sport. The fickle and ill informed buy a hawk and try to learn afterwards. The result is a prolific amount of harris hawks up for sale, unwanted, spoilt and miserable because their owners did not research their needs before buying. Writing this is unlikely to change anything because the fickle don’t read first. However, when you see a cheap hawk for sale, you need to stop and think about the owner. They advertise on this site occasionally, with “hawk wanted” and two months later ask to place “hawk for sale, excellent hunter on fur and feather etc, job change forces sale.” Another month passes and the cycle start again.

Be warned!
